William Fred Dustin passed away peacefully on October 14, 2016, with his daughters, Nancy and Susan, at his side, holding his hands. Bill was a wise, gentle and kind man who loved deeply and was deeply loved in return.
Born on June 16, 1925 in Saginaw, Michigan, to George and Elizabeth Dustin, Bill was named after his grandfathers, William Yates and Fred Dustin, and was affectionately known as Wilfred as a child.
From a very young age, Bill knew that he wanted to be a printer. He attended and graduated from Arthur Hill Technical School, after which he worked briefly at the Saginaw News before being drafted into the Army during World War II. While stationed in Fort Custer, Michigan, in the 301st MP Battalion, Bill learned that his brother Tom had been taken prisoner in Germany. Bill requested and received a transfer, and subsequently saw combat in the European theater.
After the war, Bill returned to Saginaw and married the late Florence E. Dustin (Reynolds) in September 1947. The two moved to southern California in the 1950’s, where they built a life together and raised their family. In July 2000, Bill married longtime family friend, the late Rosalie A. Dustin (Mosher) in Thousand Oaks, California.
Bill – or Dusty as he was known in the printing business – worked for several different printing companies in the Los Angeles area before going into business for himself. In the 1970’s, Dustin Printing was established and was first located on Cahuenga Blvd. in Hollywood and then in Van Nuys. After many successful years, Bill sold Dustin Printing to Conejo Graphics, where he continued to work until his retirement.
Throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s, Bill was an active and devoted member of Woodland Hills Christian Church, where he served as an elder and lay minister. He was a good man, loyal friend, and devoted Christian who demonstrated his faith through his caring and compassion for all those he encountered.
William Dustin is survived by daughters, Nancy Salyers and Susan Lockett, their husbands William and Richard, stepsons Donald Mosher and Matthew Mosher, grandchildren Jessica Vierra, Reece Earle, Dylan Lockett, Miranda Lockett, Alayna Lockett, Ian Posey, and Ryder Lockett, and great-grandson Grayson Lockett. He his preceded in death by his wives Florence Dustin and Rosalie Dustin, parents George and Elizabeth Dustin, brother G. Thomas Dustin, and stepson David Mosher.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Woodland Hills Christian Church, 5920 Shoup Avenue, Woodland Hills, CA 91367. Family and friends are invited to come and share their memories of Bill as we remember, with joy, the gift of his life in ours. Ice cream, Bill’s favorite food, will be served at a reception immediately following the service.
The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research or the National Parkinson Foundation.
