James Gayton

James "Jim" Frederick Gayton, 76, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Thursday July 14, 2016 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in White Plains, NY Feburary 18, 1940 to Muriel and Frederick Gayton, Jim attended high school in Rye, NY and became a New York State Trooper stationed in Essex county. In 1969 he moved to California and later earned BA and Master's degrees in Physical Education from California State University at Northridge. Jim's biggest passion was teaching. As professor and program Director of Adaptive Physical Education for Disabled Students at LA Valley College, he was instrumental in restoring hope and independance to his students. Known for his kindness, intelligence and strength Jim completed two Ironman marathons, was cycling trainer in two Olympics and founder of US Triathlon Association. He was an avid sports fan, gun collector and history buff. Jim was very involved in his children's cycling, soccer and swimming. He treasured watching his grandkids playing all their sports and took utmost pride in their accomplishments. When not with his family, Jim was often seen at the pool, gun range or shopping at Costco. Buck Steele, as he was known to some, cherished friendship and made friends everywhere he went. If wealth was measured by the amount of lives one positively touched, Jim would be a millionaire. He truly valued his friends and co-workers.
Survived by two sons David John Gayton and Thomas (Ryan) Gayton and four daughters; Katherine (Laurie) Gelardi, Shyhra (Brian) Bennett, Donna (Eric) Carpenter and Lindy (Eugene) Elbert; 12 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Predeceased by sister Bonnie; two grandchildren Derek James and Britney Lynn Gayton. Visitation to be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church 18400 Kinzie St Northridge, CA at 3:30pm with Mass to follow at 5pm. James will be laid to rest at St. Patrick's Cemetary in Moriah, NY along side his son.
