Doris Eva Mulliner-Cowan was born on September 13, 1922 to Victor and Mary Mulliner in Twin Falls, Idaho. She was the oldest of five siblings; one sister, Erma, three baby brothers, Don, Clyde and Gary.
She always commented that her 13th birthday fell on Friday, the 13th.
The Mulliner family moved from Idaho to California where Doris grew up in El Monte.
While working at Douglas Aircraft just before WWII, she met her soulmate, partner and husband of 57 years Fred “Freddie” Ross Cowan. He passed away on December 4, 2000.
When he proposed she said “yes” but told him she was too young and they would have to wait until she was twenty one, another year plus. They actually were married on July 25, 1943 just three months shy of her 21st birthday.
Soon afterwards, Fred was drafted and Doris followed him around the country until he was sent overseas. Doris lived in their newly purchased two bedroom house in West L.A. where she renting rooms to other wives and girlfriends of service men until Fred came home.
Fred returned from the service in 1945. They began a family in 1947 with the birth of Sandra Lee. In 1949 Stephen Ross was born and finally in 1950 Rhonda Lynn was born. They had two girls and a boy and decided they wanted another boy, but four children in one bedroom would be pretty tight. So, in 1954 they moved into a three bedroom home on a ½ acre located in Tarzana in the San Fernando Valley. In 1955 Bradley Scott was born to complete the family.
They lived in the same house for 60 years, watching their children grow up to have children of their own. They have 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren with one more on the way.
She and Freddie enjoyed being part of numerous bowling leagues, taking ballroom dancing lesson, then practicing in the living room. They went square dancing, loved playing card and board games with family and friends. They took road trips with their children to visit various museums, national parks and many other wondrous sites of the western U.S and Mexico.
Doris had a wonderful life of 96 years and passed away on December 28, 2018. She is now enjoying lawn bowling and dancing under the stars with Freddie.
